What is Good Friday?

n the Christian tradition, Easter Sunday is a joyful celebration of Christ’s resurrection. It’s also a happy time for many non-Christians, marked by colorful eggs, Easter bunnies, and plenty of sweet treats. But just a few days before Easter falls a much more somber day: Good Friday. What is Good Friday? What is the meaning of Good Friday?

When Good Friday is one of the most important days in the Holy Week, which begins on Palm Sunday and ends on Easter Sunday. In short, Good Friday meaning marks the crucifixion and dying of Christ. On this day, many Christians reflect upon Christ’s sacrifice for their sins.

Here, we’re answering some questions you might have about this important day in the Christian tradition: What’s the meaning of Good Friday? When is Good Friday in 2020? And just why is it called Good Friday?

Good Friday meaning (from the meanings “pious”, “holy” of the word “good”) is a religious holiday observed primarily by Christians commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary (Golgotha). The holiday is observed during Holy Week on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, and may coincide with the Jewish observance of Passover. It is also known as Black FridayHoly Friday, Great Friday, or Easter Friday, though the latter correctly refers to the following Friday (the Friday in Easter Week).

Good Friday 2020 is a public holiday in many countries but not in the United States.

Many Christians observe the day with prayer, and some with fasting. In the Roman Catholic tradition, believers mark When Good Friday by praying the Stations of the Cross and reciting other devotional prayers.

What is the meaning of Good Friday?

For many Christians, Good Friday is a time to remember the suffering and dying of Jesus before marking the resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday. It’s a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by Christ to atone for humanity’s sins.

In his message for Lent 2020, Pope Francis told his followers that by contemplating Christ’s sacrifice, they can reflect on their own sins and find mercy.

“Keep your eyes fixed on the outstretched arms of Christ crucified, let yourself be saved over and over again,” the Pope said. “And when you go to confess your sins, believe firmly in his mercy which frees you of your guilt. Contemplate his blood poured out with such great love, and let yourself be cleansed by it. In this way, you can be reborn ever anew.”

Why is it called Good Friday?

What did happen on Good Friday ?  And why did Jesus have to die? If Jesus died on this day then why is it called GOOD?

According to the Bible, the Son of God was flogged, ordered to carry the cross on which he would be crucified and then put to death. It’s difficult to see what is “good” about it.

Some sources suggest that the day is “good” in that it is holy, or that the phrase is a corruption of “God’s Friday”.

Good Friday meaning  is good because Christ “showed His great love for man, and purchased for him every blessing”

“That terrible Friday has been called Good Friday because it led to the Resurrection of Jesus and his victory over death and sin and the celebration of Easter, the very pinnacle of Christian celebrations,”

Probably because good used to mean holy. There are a few theories about why Good Friday is called Good Friday, but only one seems to be supported by linguists and by historical evidence.

The first of these theories is that Good Friday meaning is called Good Friday because, Christians believe, there is something very good about it: It is the anniversary, they say, of Jesus suffering and dying for their sins. “That terrible Friday has been called Good Friday because it led to the Resurrection of Jesus and his victory over death and sin and the celebration of Easter, the very pinnacle of Christian celebrations”. Perhaps this logic has helped the name stick—it is certainly how many Christians today understand the name—but it is not where the name originally comes from.

Good Friday 2020 Celebrations

In some countries Good Friday 2020 is observed as a federal or public holiday, among them there are Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Singapore, Sweden and the United Kingdom. In the United States only 11 states observe Good Friday as a state holiday.

What is “Maundy” or “Holy Thursday?”

Maundy Thursday is observed during Holy Week on the Thursday before Easter. Also referred to as “Holy Thursday” or “Great Thursday” in some denominations, Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper when Jesus shared the Passover meal with his disciples on the night before he was crucified.

In contrast to joyful Easter celebrations on Good Friday 2020 when Christians worship their resurrected Savior, Maundy Thursday services are typically more solemn occasions, marked by the shadow of Jesus‘ betrayal. While different denominations observe Maundy Thursday in their own distinct ways, two important biblical events are the primary focus of Maundy Thursday solemnization.

In England, Queen Elizabeth hands out small bags of special silver coins called ‘Maundy Money’ on Maundy Thursday, a way of symbolically giving alms to the poor. British monarchs have been handing out Maundy Money since at least the 17th century.

O Jesus, Who by reason of Thy burning love for us
hast willed to be crucified
and to shed Thy Most Precious Blood

in remembrance of Thy most sorrowful Passion and Death,
fully trusting in Thy mercy;
cleanse us from sin by Thy grace,
sanctify our toil,
give unto us and unto all those who are dear to us our
daily bread,
sweeten our sufferings,
bless our families,
and to the nations so sorely afflicted,
grant Thy peace,
which is the only true peace,
so that by obeying Thy commandments
we may come at last to the glory of heaven.Amen.
For God so loved the world He gave his only begotten Son to be crucified & expired For the sins of the world and stored humanity May God bless us on this Great Good Friday 2020!
